7 YouTube Tips Chiropractors Need to Know

It’s hard to believe that just over five years ago the founders of YouTube registered its domain name and began work on its site.

Now sitting at #3 on Alexa’s Top Sites list, YouTube today sees over 400 million visits worldwide on a monthly basis among its estimated 6 to 9 million channels.

But as a chiropractor, why should you care? More importantly, why should you care about YouTube marketing?

There are many reasons but one of the main is because YouTube is all about video broadcasting. In addition, it provides the largest search engine on the web besides Google.

Furthermore, since people use YouTube for more than just entertainment, chiropractors can capitalize on this free platform by educating and promoting their products and services to those that are looking for them.

How?

In its most simplistic form, just grab a Flip camera, record events, blog posts, and patient testimonials, sync them to your computer via the Flip’s built-in USB connector, and start uploading them to your chiropractic practice’s YouTube channel.

Once done, follow these seven tips to customize both your chiropractic videos playback controls as well as the user’s experience.

1. Uncheck “Include related Videos”

It wasn’t long ago that I was adamantly opposed to embedding YouTube videos on your chiropractic blog. Why? Because YouTube didn’t offer the ability to turn off related videos from other channels.

What this meant was that if you embedded a chiropractic-related video, a competitor’s video could potentially queue up immediately after yours causing confusion and increased bounce rates from your chiropractic prospects.

But today, YouTube now gives you the ability to uncheck the “Include related videos” option located just below the video’s embed code. See the following image for more details:

2. Play in HD

If you’ve recorded your video in high definition and plan on embedding it on your chiropractic blog, then make sure you check the box that states “Play in HD”.

Again, see the following image for an example:

3. Hide Title and Ratings

If you want to hide the title and ratings for your chiropractic video, insert the following snippet of code at the end of the movie’s value string:

&showinfo=0

For example, I’ve inserted the above snippet in the following embed code:

4. Start Video at Certain Time

If you want to start the video at a certain section, insert the following snippet of code at the end of the movie’s value string:

&start=120

Just understand that the number used is calculated in seconds; therefore, in the above example, the number “120″ represents 120 seconds.

For example, I’ve inserted the above snippet in the following embed code:

5. Auto-Play Video

If you want the video to start automatically, insert the following snippet of code at the end of the movie’s value string:

&autoplay=1

For example, I’ve inserted the above snippet in the following embed code:

6. Loop Video

If you want the video to loop continuously, insert the following snippet code at the end of the movie’s value string:

&loop=1

For example, I’ve inserted the above snippet in following embed code:

7. Show Closed-Captions

If you want to include closed-captioning, insert the following snippet code at the end of the movie’s value string:

&cc_load_policy=1

For example, I’ve inserted the above snippet in following embed code:

You can string all of the above codes together to combine their functions within your embedded video.

In closing, there’s much more involved with marketing a chiropractic practice through YouTube than just customizing its playback options. Nevertheless, the above tips should help chiropractors with basic playback functions so that an enjoyable user-experience is obtained.

  1. Of course I’m on YouTube, Doc, since you recommended it! ;-)

I have embedded other’s YouTube videos using the embed it plugin you suggested and have used the uncheck related videos option as well as starting the clip at a certain time, but thanks for all the other helpful tips!

I however still do as you suggested and post my own videos on the blog using the amazon S3 server, that way the views can not click on the video and go to my youtube channel and hence, off my site. Which would defeat the purpose of using sites like Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to drive traffic to the blog.

However, I then still upload the videos to my YouTube channel and a few other video sharing sites, using TubeMogul as you also suggested.

I then mention my YouTube channel at the end of the post as well as a button on my site’s side bar.

  2. Dr. MacNamara,

Great post and a ton of useful information in regards to coding. Another important part when using YouTube more specifically for your specific channel is to title the video correctly along with including your website in the description and a relevant keyword description.
