Are you looking for a more innovative way to accept payments from your chiropractic patients?
If you answered a resounding “YES”, then check out Square.
What’s Square?
As stated on Square’s website, “Square is you when the answer to the question, “Do you accept cards?” is ‘Yes’.”
Square enables you to accept credit cards with just your phone or tablet. The app is free. The card reader is free. The fee is only 2.75% per swipe, with no monthly fees or commitments.
How do I sign up for Square and get a free card reader?
There are two ways to sign up:
- Sign up on our website
- Or, you can sign up via the Square app
Signing up on the website
This is the easiest method if you have access to a computer.
- Go to squareup.com and enter in your information and set a password.
- From there, you’ll have the option for signing up as an individual or a business. Choose the relevant option and move on to the rest of the form.
- Click “Continue” and you’ll be presented with a series of 3 questions to help us verify your identity. Answer all of them correctly and click “Continue.”
- You’re finished! After downloading the app, you can start accepting payments immediately via manual entry and your reader will be shipped in a few days. That was certainly fast, wasn’t it?
Signing up via the Square app
Imagine selling at a health fair and all the cool vendors are accepting Square. “How do I get in on this?” you may ask. If you have an iOS device (Android coming soon) you can start right away!
The activation flow in app is quite similar to the website, though there are a few differences.
- First, download the Square app from the Apple iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod) App Store. Tip: Visiting squareup.com/app on your device will take you straight to the relevant download page.
- Tap on the “Create an account” button to start the activation process.
- The rest of the activation flow will be similar to the website. You’ll be asked to input your personal and business information and answer a few questions to verify your identity.
- After you’re all done, you can start accepting payments via manual entry right on the spot! Your reader will be shipped in a few days.
Is my device supported with Square?
Square is supported on most of the popular Apple iOS and Google Android devices.
Note: All iPod Touch models are also supported; except the very first generation. Apple has an easy to follow guide on their site to help you determine which one you have.
Another incredible feature about Square is Card Case.
What is Card Case?
Card Case is a feature within Square’s latest app that allows customers to buy items from their favorite merchants without having to swipe their credit card!
They simply open a tab through their mobile device, say their name during checkout, and they’re automatically sent a text message receipt.
Here’s a quick video on how it works:
How do I get Card Case for my business?
Currently, Card Case is only available to a select group of sellers. You can express your interest by signing in to your Square account (or signing up for one), however, and we will reach back out to you as we begin to expand. It shouldn’t be too long!
So, if you’re ready to take things up a notch, I highly recommend that you signup for Square. I’ve been using it for well over a year and have been extremely pleased.
Question: Are you using Square? If so, how has it made things easier for you and your chiropractic practice?

My understanding is that you cannot charge patients HSA cards with Square. If you have a lot of HSA patients don’t dump your merchant account just yet.
That is correct, Dr. Swanson. But if one doesn’t deal with HSA cards, Square is still a great alternative.
Nice scoop Dr. MacNamara!
I would ad that doc’s read ALL of the fine print in any agreement with the company. I recently ran into a problem with a “simple” credit card merchant provider who offered a free iPhone app.
Basically, they lied about their service abilities and really screwed up on the money end. After we dropped them one of their reps contacted us to see how our service was going. The rep didn’t even take the time to read up on our account and find out how dissatisfied we were with the service.
But, this looks like some awesome technology.
I’m glad you enjoyed the post, Dr. Doughty. And, I’m in agreement with you regarding the fine print.
However, I’ve been using their service for well over a year and have been completely satisfied. Both their product and service are innovative. The newest feature, aka Card Case, is revolutionary. I can see this being a win-win for both business owner and customer.
Thanks again for jumping into the conversation!
Alas! I now have justification in purchasing an iPad
But seriously, this is a wonderful tool for all businesses, especially a retail merchant or vendor. So easy to set up and I’m even going to pitch this to my husband for his business transactions.
If that’s all you need for justification, then GO FOR IT! I’m loving my iPad 2 and it’d be a wonderful addition to your husband’s business. Combined with Square, you guys just can’t go wrong.
