How to Optimize a Movie File for Web Playback Using Mac OS X

One thing’s for sure– technology changes rapidly. And, if you’re talking about the Internet, you can guarantee that every single day new forms of technology are developed to help enhance our online experience. Matter of fact, it changes so fast that most people take for granted the hours developers put in to make our online activities smooth and effortless.

However, one of the main backbones to the Internet, known as HTML or HyperText Markup Language, doesn’t change as quickly as other aspects of web technology. Furthermore, since its inception in 1991, HTML has gone through only four major metamorphoses.

Currently, HTML 4.01 is the standard. Believe it or not, it was published in May of 2000 — over ten years ago which is an eternity in Internet terms.

However, in January 2008 HTML 5 was published as a Working Draft by the World Wide Web Consortium. Even though it hasn’t completely taken over the web, one can see signs that it’s just around the bend.

One company showcasing its power is Apple. Recently they published their thoughts on HMTL5 and web standards and included an amazing HTML5 Showcase.

What blew me away was the quality of their HTML5 video demonstration. It clearly rivals FLASH and demonstrates why Apple has abandoned it for a more superior platform.

But, until HTML5 completely takes over the web, we’re stuck with FLASH as the most utilized way to feature video.

So, today I’d like to quickly show you how optimize your movie files for use on the web using Mac OS X. All it takes is a standard .mov file and Apple’s QuickTime Player.

Question: How are you using video on your chiropractic blog? What software do you use to optimize them for easy accessibility?

  1. I don’t use video as much as I know I should. Last night I was goofing off with Sony Vegas and made this one:

But what I need to do is create a solid script and narrate it over a screen recording. I’ve got lots of ideas and the software, but I procrastinate.

I’ve also got an introduction video on my home page, but I’d like to redo it with better subject-framing in the video.

    • At least you’re beginning to utilize video, Dr. Lloyd. Many chiropractors don’t even have video on their site at all. So, I commend you!

Regarding procrastination, I recommend that you setup an editorial calendar for both your blog posts and videos. By sticking to a calendar, at least you’ll have more incentive to get it done.

Video isn’t the easiest to produce. Not because of software limitation but primarily because how more labor intensive it is compared to text-based content. Regardless, it’s an extremely important aspect of SEO as more people expect it to enrich your content.

Thanks again for your comment and have a wonderful 4th of July!

  2. Great screencast, Dr. MacNamara, and glad to be an inspiration for one of your posts.

My first keynote presentation video post will be coming out soon. After I had trouble doing it on my own and asked you for help last month via an e-mail, you walked me through these steps above and all while you where on your family vacation!

Thanks to all your help, guidance, and knowledge everything is working and the post will be out this August.

    • Glad to help as much as I can, Dr. Heins, even while on vacation! ;-)

I look forward to checking out your first screencast and I’m sure your patients will love it.

      Enjoy the 4th, my friend!

And you can’t see your videos on an iPad or iPhone . . .. that’s way it makes sense to upload to YouTube . . and embed the result.
