The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us

Do you know what motivates you as an individual? What about as a chiropractor? Or, as an entrepreneur?

What about your chiropractic assistants? Do you know what motivates them?

Many of us have been trained to motivate people by rewarding them monetarily. However, as this short video presented by Daniel Pink, author of Drive, points out, that doesn’t always work as we expect.

Matter of fact, this cleverly done video ingeniously and creatively argues the surprising truth about what motivates us. Watch and allow your paradigm to shift.

Question: Did this video surprise you? Will it change the way you compensate your chiropractic assistants or office managers?

  1. Jeremy McMinn says:

I’m surprised no one has commented on this fabulous video.

Thank you, Dr. Mac, for sharing this with us all. Chiropractors can certainly take ALOT from the concepts and ideas put forward in this video.

Video gem of the week for me!

    • Agreed! This video is absolutely amazing and will change the mindsets of many chiropractors that grab hold of its message.

Plus, if they grasp the concepts that are introduced, they’ll be able to take their chiropractic practice to an entirely new level.

      Why?

Because there’s a principle with practicing that states the following:

Give me a topnotch chiropractor with a mediocre chiropractic assistant and that practice won’t go anywhere.

However, if you give me a topnotch chiropractic assistant with a mediocre chiropractor, that practice will soar!

In essence, it’s the chiropractic assistant that allows doctors of chiropractic to reach heights that they’ve never imagined. Therefore, whatever bonus they incorporate into their office should be linked to the concepts and message articulated through this video if they want to see amazing results.

  2. Daniel Pink is awesome at tricking the mind into logical thinking. I am a fan of his “intelligent signage”. Dr. Beck had shared this video with me a few months back and what was interesting to me [other than you can't stop watching] was the way my teenage son put down his cell phone and iTouch, got up off of the couch, took his eyes off of television and stood over my shoulder for the entire length of the video.

I have hope that his thumbs won’t fall off, his ears won’t develop calluses from his earphones and his brain still reacts to intelligent commentary. [sarcasm intended]

Mr. Pink’s book is on my reading wish list…I totally get the whole theory about being more productive with tasks that I am not asked to do. It’s refreshing to know there is a reason and it is a trait that is beginning to be recognized and appreciated.

Now if we can just keep people from labeling altruistic persons with initials [a disorder] we might move forward as a society.

Oh my; I sound cranky today…I needed your blog post this afternoon!

    • I absolutely agree, Cindi! The entire video is mesmerizing!

And, there’s not only hope for your teenage son but also middle-aged doctors like myself that are wired to use a TV remote not necessarily to see what’s on but rather what ELSE is on! ;-)

His video engaged and captivated me throughout the entire presentation.

Thanks for the comment and I’m glad I was able to help propel you through your afternoon!

  3. Saw this video awhile ago. Not only are the concepts amazing, so is the art work.

Why do you think a top notch CA will make a practice soar, but not the opposite? I ask, because in my experience it’s absolutely true.

    • The reason why a CA drives the practice is because he or she is the very first impression of your chiropractic business. Train them to take care of your business and you’ll succeed as long as your system can support the growth.

  4. Wanda Neville says:

Was I surprised by the results of the studies? Yes, I was. I then tried to imagine how to utilize this information in my one CA chiropractic office. That will take some thought to come up with different incentives other than money!
    Any thoughts on that?

    • You first need to understand what makes your CA tick, Dr. Neville. In other words, what’s his/her personality and what truly motivates him/her. Based off of that research, you’ll better understand how to compensate them.

I’d recommend reading his book to gain additional insights. He provides ample suggestions and tips that should get the creative juices flowing.
